In 1950 brothers Harold and Jimmy Bryars’ friend Bud suggested they open a Landing at the site of the Hubbard Boom. The boom was used years earlier to collect and control the logs from the swamp. They leased the property from their cousin Leslie for 99 years and christened it Hubbard Landing. Leslie later willed the property to the Bryars, ensuring the landing would remain in the family.
Jimmy brought on the first Hubbard landing employee and together they cleared the road to the site by hand. That dirt road was the only way to get to the Landing for many years. They installed a launching pad then built a small store and three rental cabins. The business was successfully moving forward so they added three more cabins, a camp site for temporary camping and cleared spaces on the waterfront and on the hillside behind the store for permanent camps.
In the early days, heavy wooden boats were available for rent. The boats would be rented sometimes twice in one day, and after a quick washing they would go back out again. In those days fishermen usually just brought a small motor to attach to the back of the boats, a gas can, poles, reels and a tackle box. The wooden boats were eventually replaced with aluminum models, and in time, the sport of fishing evolved into fishermen having their own boats with sometimes matching trailers, so the rentals were no longer needed.
In the ’70s, the store was converted into a catfish restaurant run by Harold and Jimmy’s sister Annie, and later by their families. The restaurant was popular with locals and others from the surrounding area. It closed in 1985. The memories linger, but the great food and good times are missed by all.
Though both Harold and Jimmy have passed away, the Bryars families still own and operate Hubbard Landing. Our goal is to continue to meet our guests’ recreational needs by consistently maintaining and improving the Landing to ensure life on the lake is everything you have come to enjoy and expect.
It is our joy and pleasure to serve you, and we hope you find Hubbard Landing as a place to relax and build memories.
Tight lines,
Larry Bryars
